Spurs’ champion retires from basketball after long NBA career

After a long NBA career and a successful playing career in Europe as well, one of the San Antonio Spurs’ former champions is hanging up his hightops.

Marco Belinelli shared with EuroHoops that he has played his final professional basketball game.

Belinelli spent the last five seasons playing in his native Italy. He just helped Virtus Bologna to a title this week before announcing he was finished.

Belinelli, 39, played 13 seasons in the NBA.

He was a Warriors draft pick, but his most memorable years were in San Antonio, where he was a 2014 NBA champion.

Belinelli’s best skill was his shooting. He was a 37.6% 3-point shooter for his career, including 38.9% with the Spurs.

He played for the Spurs, Hornets, Warriors, Bulls, Kings, Raptors, Hawks and 76ers.

All told, Belinelli played 860 NBA games, starting 219 of them. He averaged 9.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

He was a career 84.6% free-throw shooter.

The 6-foot-5 Italian made an incredible basketball life for himself, and now he’s decided to move into whatever his next chapter might hold.
