The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball team remained perfect on the year heading into a key conference game, rising up the national rankings in a poll earlier this week.
The Bear Cubs (17-0, 4-0) climbed five spots in the Perfect Game JC National Rankings to No. 14. The Bear Cubs are also the top-ranked team in the California Community College Athletic Association.
SRJC won the opener of a three-game series against No. 8 Cosumnes River on Tuesday, 6-1. JT Summers went 3-for-4 with a home run and Cooper Wood went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the win. Jordan Giacomini earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts, one walk and four hits allowed in 4⅔ scoreless innings.
The Bear Cubs were hosting Cosumnes River on Thursday and will be on the road in the finale Friday before a three-game series with No. 17 San Joaquin Delta next week.
SSU basketball
The California Collegiate Athletic Association unveiled all-conference basketball honors this week and several SSU players were selected.
On the men’s side, junior guard Chris Holley was a first-team selection, while junior guard James Noble and senior guard Julian Bryant were honorable mentions. Holley averaged 11.9 points, 3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 55% from the field and 43% from three-point range.
On the women’s side, senior guard Jayme Blackard and junior guard Alysa Lopez were second-team selections. Lopez averaged 13.5 points and 4 rebounds per game, while Blackard averaged 11.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.6 steals.
The SSU men’s basketball finished the season 12-16 overall and ninth in the CCAA at 8-14.
The women’s team finished fifth in the CCAA at 12-9 and is 15-13 overall ahead of Thursday night’s CCAA Tournament opener against No. 4 seed Cal State San Bernardino.
SRJC track and field
The Bear Cubs had a number of strong performances at the Beaver Invitational at American River College over the weekend.
On the men’s side, NJ Robert won the pole vault with a mark of 4.25 meters, took second in the javelin with a throw of 40.41 meters and placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds.
Jared Hayes placed fourth in both the 800 (1:59.56) and 1,500 (4:06.4). Oscar Cruz placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 38.13 meters, Josiah Orozco finished fifth in the long jump (6.46 meters), Johnny Ando placed sixth in the 800 (2:00.16) and Vitauts Vanags took sixth in the hammer throw (30.31 meters).
For the women, Siolo Lua finished second in the shot put (11.67 meters), third in the discus (37.03 meters) and second in the hammer throw (42.25 meters). Her hammer throw mark is seventh all-time in program history.
Addison Hackett and Addie Waterman also set top-10 program marks. Hackett’s third-place finish in the hammer throw of 42.08 meters is No. 8 all-time in SRJC history and Waterman’s third-place finish in the 400 of 59.07 is No. 10 all-time.
In other results, Leyna Stein placed second in the long jump (4.85 meters), Alexandra Van Holt placed third in the 1,500 (5:04.65), Lauren King placed fourth in the 100 (12.63) and third in the 200 (26.79) and Diana Valencia Dimas placed fourth in the 400 (59.57).
Both teams will compete at the Cal Opener at Cal Berkeley this weekend.
SRJC softball
The SRJC softball team has won three in a row to move back over .500 on the year.
The Bear Cubs swept Butte 8-7 and 7-3 in a doubleheader Wednesday following a 6-2 win over Folsom Lake on Tuesday, improving to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the Big 8.
Stats were not available from their wins over Butte.
