Plus, more updates on SRJC and SSU teams in The Press Democrat’s college notebook.
The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball suffered its first loss of the season Thursday after starting the year 20-0.
The Bear Cubs, ranked No. 1 in the California Community College Athletic Association, dropped their second game of a three-game series against San Joaquin Delta 6-4. The Mustangs, No. 16 in the CCCAA NorCal rankings, rallied past the Bear Cubs with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Still, it’s been a remarkable start to the spring for SRJC, which is now 20-1 and 7-1 in the Big 8. Perfect Game, a national baseball outlet, had SRJC as the No. 13 team in the country heading into this week.
The Bear Cubs won the opening game over San Joaquin Delta 6-1 behind a strong showing from Jordan Giacomini (six innings, one hit, one earned run, one walk, 12 strikeouts) on the mound Tuesday.
The Bear Cubs will look to bounce back in the series finale at home Saturday.
SSU baseball
It hasn’t been the best of springs yet for the Sonoma State baseball team, but the Seawolves were able to pick up a marquee win last week over Chico State.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th, Aryonis Harrison delivered the win with a walk-off single that scored Chris Ortiz from third and gave SSU the 2-1 win.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Seawolves (6-14, 3-9).
The Wildcats were ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division 2 West Regional rankings and have been receiving votes for the national top 25.
SSU women’s basketball
The Seawolves put up an admirable fight against one of the top teams in a nation in a season-ending 56-45 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the semifinals of the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last Friday.
The Toros are ranked No. 4 in the nation and the 11-point final deficit is the smallest they’ve had in a win in over a month.
The game was tied at 25 at halftime.
Jayme Blackard led SSU (16-14, 12-9) with 12 points and four rebounds and Sheriene Arikat had seven points with seven rebounds.
Arikat also earned an academic honor last week, receiving the Elite 13 Award from the CCAA. Arikat maintained a 3.89 GPA as of the Seawolves’ top players this season.
SRJC women’s wrestling
The SRJC women’s wrestling team went 2-2 to place seventh overall in its first appearance at the CCCAA State Duals over the weekend at Fresno City College.
The Bear Cubs fell 40-10 to No. 1 Cerritos in the first round and then defeated Santa Ana College 24-14. They fell to Sacramento City in a hard-fought 24-20 loss in their third match, but then capped the day with a 25-15 win over Cuesta College in the seventh-place match.
Luana Stathopoulos went 4-0 at 138 pounds and Lyla Kondrashoff also went 4-0 at 160, while Jasmine Vo (145) and Cassady Lopez (138) both went 3-1 on the day.
SSU golf
The SSU men’s golf team finished second out of seven teams at the Nighthawk Invitational at Callippe Preserve in Pleasanton last week
Ivan Sablan placed second individually in the field, while Ryan Stewart and Cole Kroeker both tied for seventh as individuals.
Jack Brown and John Sprague also placed in the top 20 individually for SSU, which is back in action in the Pioneer Shootout in Alameda this week.
SRJC track and field
