The College of Staten Island baseball team is used to doing good deeds, whether it’s helping out Teddy Atlas with his annual Turkey Giveaway or just out in the community giving their time to others.
For the third straight season, the squad, headed by Mike Mauro, will conduct the Hometown Hero Game Fundraiser on April 24, 2025 during the Dolphins’ 7 p.m. encounter vs. Felician University at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.
The event, sponsored by TLC Physical Therapy, will honor three deceased Staten Islanders, who were outstanding members in the community. They are late firefighter Steve Sosa, Port Authority Police Officer Anthony Varvaro and former NYPD officer Paul Polimeni. Admission is free and tickets can be obtained here.
The game will also honor youngster Rocco DiMaggio, who is battling cancer.
“The Heroes game keeps the memory alive of some great Staten Island sports people,” said Mauro. “My CSI baseball team looks forward to honoring them in the way they deserve! This year, we will also honor Rocco DiMaggio, who is fighting and batting cancer. This young man is an inspiration to all and we can’t wait to have him join us during this special night.”
Sosa, a retired FDNY firefighter and life-long Staten Island resident, died unexpectedly at the age of 62 on Feb. 28, 2020.
Varvaro, a local baseball legend who pitched in the Majors before becoming a police officer, died in a wrong-way vehicular crash in New Jersey on Sept. 11, 2022 while on the way to work. He was 37.
Polimeni died unexpectedly two years ago. He had spent many hours helping out while his kids played at Mid-Island Little League.
“All the money raised will be put into a scholarship for a baseball player who attends the College of Staten Island and plays for the Dolphins,” said Mauro. “TLC Physical therapy will once again be the lead sponsor for the event.”
The day will feature many raffles, a 50/50 and food trucks. Mauro says members of all four families will throw out the first pitch.
