Syracuse, N.Y. — Georgia transfer cornerback Chris Peal, a former Top 200 recruit in the country, committed to Syracuse on Monday.
Peal announced his commitment on Instagram.
Peal was ranked as the No. 173 recruit coming out of high school as a member of the Class of 2023 in the 247 Sports composite rankings. He redshirted his first season at Georgia and played in four games last year. He made one tackle.
According to Pro Football Focus, Peal played in two games and 16 snaps on defense.
Peal, listed at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, is believed to have three years of college eligibility remaining and plays a position of need for the Orange.
Syracuse is exceptionally young at cornerback following the departure of its top three corners from last season.
Clarence Lewis ran out of eligibility, while Jayden Bellamy and Marcellus Barnes transfered.
During the spring game, Syracuse started true freshman Demetres Samuel Jr. and true sophomore Davien Kerr at the position.
Peal doesn’t add much playing experience to the position group but is another talented player for a team that needs to identify two new starters.
Peal was ranked by On3.com as the No. 745 player that has transferred since the end of last season and the fourth-best cornerback currently available.
Peal was coached for one season at Georgia by Syracuse coach Fran Brown.
Syracuse’s staff had a solid success rate last season when bringing in transfers who had been coached by members of the staff.
Jackson Meeks played for Brown at Georgia, Fadil Diggs played for defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson at Texas A&M and safety Devin Grant played for linebackers coach Robert Wright.
Peal played high school football at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Syracuse’s crop of transfers for next season is currently ranked No. 44 in the country by 247 Sports and No. 68th by On3.com, which ranks based on how much a team has improved its roster.
The Orange’s transfers efforts have revolved largely on bringing in players like Peal who were highly-ranked as recruits but have not yet been productive in college football.
