Syracuse men’s basketball gets portal commitment from former 4-star recruit

Syracuse, N.Y. — Tyler Betsey has committed to playing college basketball at Syracuse next season.

Betsey, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound rising sophomore, is a two-time former Gatorade high school player of the year in Connecticut. He was a four-star high school recruit in the Class of 2024 before committing to Cincinnati.

UConn and Alabama were among his suitors when he chose the Bearcats as his initial college destination. In Betsey’s freshman season, he averaged 11.1 minutes, 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. He shot 32% from the 3-point line on good volume (26-of-81).

Freshmen historically have struggled to make 3s in their first year of college basketball. Of the 112 overall shots Betsey took last season, 81 of them came from behind the 3-point line. His addition to the Orange roster provides the program with another perimeter threat.

Betsey was ranked as the 47th best player in his high school class in 247sports.com’s composite high school evaluations. He played at St. Thomas More High School in Oakdale, Connecticut. For evaluation context, Donnie Freeman was ranked 13th; Elijah Moore was ranked 99th in that same class.

Betsey has good positional size and like most of SU’s acquisitions in the transfer portal has more than one season of college eligibility remaining. Last season, every SU transfer was a senior or a graduate student.

Betsey’s addition to the SU roster now puts the Orange at 12 players for 2025-26:

Guards/wings: JJ Starling, Nait George, Nate Kingz, Bryce Zephir, Kiyan Anthony, Luke Fennell, Aaron Womack

Big forwards/centers: Donnie Freeman, William Kyle, Ibraham Souare, Sadiq White, Tyler Betsey

The transfer portal closed for entries on April 22, but teams can continue to add players until classes begin in the fall.
