Tennessee baseball climbs in polls following series win at Ole Miss

Tennessee baseball moved up in three of the four major college baseball polls on Monday following its series win at No. 6 Ole Miss over the weekend.

The Vols moved up one spot to No. 3 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, and also moved up one spot in D1Baseball’s poll, but to No. 4. They remained at No. 5 in Perfect Game’s latest rankings.

“Our new No. 1, the Texas Longhorns (29-5) just continue to figure out ways to win series’ and find themselves atop the poll as well as the SEC standings after a hard fought weekend at Kentucky,” Perfect Game wrote. “Likewise, No. 2 Clemson (33-6) has yet to drop a series all season and trail only No. 13 Georgia Tech (29-7) in the ACC standings. The Georgia Bulldogs (32-6) bounced back from getting swept in Austin and are No. 3 this week after taking down now No. 4 Arkansas (32-5). The Tennessee Volunteers (31-5) hold tight at No. 5, showing the ability to win a tough road series at No. 12 Ole Miss (27-9).”

Tennessee’s biggest jump on Monday was in Baseball America’s Top 25. The publication moved the Vols up two spots to No. 2

10 SEC teams are ranked by D1Baseball for the second consecutive week. Joining Tennessee in D1Poll’s is Texas (No. 1), Arkansas (No. 2), Georgia (No. 5), Auburn (No. 8), LSU (No. 9), Ole Miss (No. 11), Alabama (No. 15), Oklahoma (No. 18) and Vanderbilt (No. 19).

“For the second week in a row, there is a new No. 1,” D1Baseball wrote. “Texas takes over the top spot for the first time this season after winning a road series at Kentucky. The Longhorns, who also own marquee series wins vs. LSU and Georgia (a sweep last week), now sit alone atop the SEC standings at 13-2, and they have not posted a losing weekend all season long.

“Texas swaps places with Arkansas, which falls from No. 1 to No. 2 after dropping two of three on the road at Georgia, the first series loss of the year for the Razorbacks. Clemson and Tennessee move up one spot apiece to Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, after posting 3-1 weeks. Georgia returns to the top five behind them after the series win against the Hogs.”

Here’s where the Volunteers are ranked coming off their first SEC series loss in over a year.

  • Baseball America: No. 2 (+2)
  • USA TODAY Coaches Poll: No. 3 (+1)
  • D1Baseball: No. 4 (+1)
