Tennessee baseball held an intrasquad scrimmage on Monday afternoon with first pitch 11 days away. The defending national champs begin Tony Vitello’s eighth season on Rocky Top when it hosts Hofstra on Valentine’s Day to begin a three-game series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Vols scrimmaged for five and a half innings to begin the new week. There are still a handful of spots within the lineup that players are competing for, though several positions also appear to be secured. Position battles at first base, in left field and at the designated hitter spot are fierce. There’s even an ongoing battle to be the backup catcher, which is significant given the fact that projected starting backstop Cannon Peebles is dealing with an arm injury leading up to opening day.
Projected starting third baseman Andrew Fischer is also dealing with an arm injury as first pitch approaches. His absence in recent scrimmages has highlighted the backup competition at the hot corner in addition to catcher.
GoVols247 was on hand for Monday’s scrimmage to gather notes and make observations in the midst of the ongoing construction at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Here’s what we observed, as well as some notes on junior RHP AJ Russell as he works his way back from Tommy John Surgery.
