Texas A&M named overwhelming national champion pick in poll of college baseball coaches

Ahead of the start of the 2025 NCAA baseball season, college baseball coaches were high on the Texas A&M Aggies’ chances to bring home their first championship in program history.

Baseball America, a notable sports publication covering all levels of baseball, asked 50 college baseball coaches which team they were picking to take home the 2025 National Championship at this year’s College World Series. 41 of those coaches picked the Aggies, giving the team an 82% mark of confidence.

The only other teams to receive votes were LSU (three votes), Virginia (two votes), Tennessee, (two votes), Clemson (one vote) and North Carolina (two votes).

The Aggies have given coaches reasons to believe in them. The squad finished the 2024 regular season with a 53-15 record, good for their second-most wins in program history. In the postseason, A&M steamrolled its way to Omaha and made it all the way to a win-or-go-home Game 3 of the College World Series Final, where they lost to Tennessee by a score of 6-5.

In the first afternoon following that loss, the team reentered the national spotlight, when then-A&M Head Baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle was controversially announced as the new coach at the University of Texas, A&M’s archrival.

Despite Schlossnagle’s departure, A&M was able to reload and keep most of their roster on board. They hired former hitting coach Michael Earley to be their new head coach and retained star players like Jace Laviolette, Ryan Prager and Kaeden Kent. They were also quick to plug holes in the transfer portal, bringing in several new players including former Texas Tech first baseman Gavin Kash.

It’s worth noting that college baseball is among the more difficult sports to predict, and preseason hype doesn’t even guarantee a trip to Omaga, let alone a national title. Even so, now that they’re reignited by new and returning talent, the Aggies are hopeful that they can prove the coaches correct and finish the job this time around.
