Texas’ Arch Manning not deemed the best returning quarterback in college football

Texas QB Arch Manning is expected to be one of the top Heisman candidates during the 2025 college football season. He’s not expected to be part of one of the league’s best QB rooms in Austin, though.

Not only are the Longhorns not listed as one of the nation’s best QB rooms, but CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah believes Manning isn’t even the best returning signal-caller – instead giving that honor to LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier.

Jeyarajah listed the Tigers’ as the second-best QB room behind Alabama’s.

“Nussmeier is perhaps the best returning quarterback in college football after clearing 4,000 yards as a first-year starter. He will have plenty to work with after LSU brought in an impressive portal class. Landing Van Buren from Mississippi State is a coup. He was essentially the only bright spot on a miserable Bulldogs squad and has all the tools to be LSU’s quarterback of the future after throwing for more than 1,800 yards in Starkville. Behind Van Buren, the backup situation gets a little interesting. The Tigers moved running back Ju’Juan Johnson to quarterback. Freshman Colin Hurley suffered a serious car accident in January, and there have been few updates on his status. Still, the duo at the top should cover most situations,” Jeyarajah wrote.

Manning lacks Nussmeier’s experience. As the NFL is learning, snap count matters for a QB to be ready to win.

Not to mention, Texas lost a ton of talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball to the NFL draft and transfer portal. That could negatively affect Manning’s first go-round as QB1 in Austin and justify Jeyarajah’s prediction this fall.
