Texas basketball vs. Missouri: Live score updates, highlights from SEC game

Texas basketball picked up its first win over a ranked opponent with a 61-53 victory over No. 24 Missouri Tuesday at Moody Center

With little room for error, the Longhorns (13-6, 2-4 SEC) needed the win to bolster their NCAA Tournament case. A win over ranked Missouri (15-4, 4-2) is especially important since it gives Texas a second Quad 1 win.

Texas gutted out the win despite shooting 34% from the floor and having just one player – Arthur Kaluma, with 14 points – top a dozen points. The Longhorns compensated for that poor shooting by winning the rebounding battle for the first time in SEC play, 39-31, and holding a good-shooting Missouri team to 31.3% shooting from the floor.

Kaluma added 12 rebounds to go with his 14 points, and Tre Johnson tallied 12 points despite shooting 3-of-15 from the floor.

MISSOURI 25 28 53
TEXAS 32 29 61

Final: Texas 61, Missouri 53

Texas outscored Missouri 16-4 in the final 6 minutes of the game to pull out the needed win. Up next for Texas? A visit from Texas A&M Saturday.

:49 2H: Texas 58, Missouri 51

Another big defensive play from Kadin Shedrick, who draws an offensive foul. Then a crafty left-handed layup by Tre Johnson. Texas can sense its first win over a ranked opponent.

2:22 2H: Texas 54, Missouri 50

Kadin Shedrick jumps on the ground for a loose ball and possession. Julian Larry absorbs an offensive foul. Those are what Texas coach Rodney Terry likes to call winning plays.

3:07 2H: Texas 51, Missouri 50

One thing both teams have done well in an ugly game? Shoot free throws. Texas is at 17-of-22 from the line while Mizzou is 18-of-25. This game feels like the best foul-shooting squad will escape with a win.

5:37 2H: Missouri 49, Texas 46

Wow, a grown-man dunk from Mizzou’s Tamar Bates and Texas coach Rodney Terry calls a timeout. You can sense the desperation for a win from the Texas bench right now; what will Terry draw up in the timeout?

7:50 2H: Missouri 45, Texas 41

This game is within the grasp of Texas, but the Horns cannot buy a basket. They’ve somehow cooled off from 36% shooting in the first half. Tre Johnson, the star freshman, is just 2-of-11 from the floor and Texas has two baskets in the last 10 minutes. Who will be the first Longhorn to reach double-figure points?

11:52 2H: Missouri 42, Texas 40

Missouri had made at least 10 3-pointers in each of their past three games entering tonight’s game but went just 1-for-10 in the first half. But the Tigers are 3-of-5 from long distance in the second half; can Texas keep pace? Arthur Kaluma pacing Texas with nine points and nine boards while battling hard in the paint.

16:00 2H: Texas 36, Missouri 32

Tre Johnson has made just two shots for Texas but is getting to the line, where he’s 4-for-4. Can the Longhorns’ leading scorer heat up enough in the second half to help UT hold on for a massive win?

Halftime: Texas 32, Missouri 25

How about that for a dramatic end to the half? Texas PG Julian Larry throws up an alley-oop to Tramon Mark, and he throws it down with his left hand. Texas leads despite shooting just 35% from the floor. It’s amazing what good work on the glass will do for you; the Horns have lost the rebounding battle in all of their SEC games but lead 19-14 behind five boards from Arthur Kaluma.

1:55 1Q: Texas 30, Missouri 20

Some shots starting to fall for Texas. Arthur Kaluma nails a trey in transition, and Tre Johnson follows with a baseline triple. Timeout Mizzou.

3:56 1Q: Texas 22, Missouri 19

Both teams have settled into a slugfest, and Texas is punching away at that Mizzou zone in the paint. The Longhorns are 8-of-10 from the foul line compared to 6-of-19 from the floor. Jordan Pope (8 points) is the only Horn with more than three points.

7:49 1Q: Texas 13, Missouri 8

Jordan Pope has added some juice to the Texas offense with a pair of 3-pointers. That’s exactly what the Longhorns need because they are playing good defense against a potent Tiger lineup and outrebounding Mizzou 14-8.

11:12 1Q: Texas 5, Missouri 4

The officials overturn a goal-tending call on Arthur Kaluma from 2 minutes ago, which wipes out a Mizzou bucket.

11:12 1Q: Missouri 6, Texas 5

I mean, the stats don’t lie for Texas. The Longhorns miss their first nine shots until Kadin Shedrick drops in a bucket at the 11:46 mark. They have four turnovers and have missed all five of their 3-point shots. Yet they’re down one point to the No. 24 team (coaches poll) in the nation.

15:41 1Q: Missouri 2, Texas 1

These are two of the better-shooting teams in the SEC so of course they open the game a combined 0-for-9 from the floor until Mizzou final hits a shot. Yikes.

Starters announced for Texas, Missouri

The usual starting lineup for Texas with guards Jordan Pope and Tre Johnson, wing Tramon Mark, forward Arthur Kaluma and post Kadin Shedrick. Missouri will counter with Anthony Roberts II, Tamar Bates and Tony Perkins and forwards Trent Pierce and Mark Mitchell. The 6-foot-9 Mitchell is the one to watch; the Duke transfer leads Mizzou in scoring and rebounding.
