Republican Senator Ted Cruz is facing a motion by Texas Democrats to ban him from attending college playoff sports games after his ‘curse’ struck Houston
Texas Democrats want Republican Senator Ted Cruz banned from college playoff games, with State teams suffering from “a well-known curse” in his presence.
Cruz is a die-hard all-sports Houston fan, but his support has become a talking point, with teams suffering defeats and the Senator watching on. The 54-year-old attended the University of Houston‘s defeat in the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game in April to Florida.
Cruz was also in attendance as the Astros lost Game 1 of the 2023 American League Championship Series to the Texas Rangers, who went on to win the series. Harris County Democratic Party precinct chairs Charles Kuffner, and Bill Kelly has now moved to ban Cruz from playoff games.

“That was one of the first things people pointed to after the game,” Kelly said. “It’s a problem. He needs to quit going to college games in Texas.”
“The University of Houston and Texas Tech have a pretty good rivalry between the Cougs and the Red Raiders,” Kelly, a Houston alum, added to Chron. “We don’t agree on much, but we all agree that the nine scariest words for any college fan are, ‘I’m Ted Cruz, and I’m coming to your game.'”
“Republicans, Democrats and independents — can all agree that when your college team is playing, Ted Cruz is the absolute last person you want to see,” he continued. Cruz humored the Texas Democrats’ latest move.
Through a spokesperson, Cruz told WLS: “Dishonest and partisan clickbait. Senator Cruz has been attending Texas sports games his entire life. When they win, he’s there. When they lose, he’s there. When Texas Democrats lose, he’s almost always there.”
Cruz has also championed lower prices so fans can follow their respective teams. Speaking to executives from Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League, Cruz raised concerns over the cost of streaming sports games.
“Fans are understandably upset that it’s really hard to watch your home team, figure out what app or what network, how to watch it,” he said. “It’s fractured right now. It’s expensive right now.”
“The question is if you should continue to get this anti-trust exemption,” he continued. “You’re clobbering the consumer and making everything more expensive.”
For Cruz and his supposed “curse,” he will have to watch as the Gators pay Republican President Donald Trump a visit to the White House. Gators head coach Todd Golden confirmed that the team are planning on visiting.
“I’ve been told we’re going to the White House, so I’m pretty excited about that,” Golden said. “We’ll have to get everybody back together to be able to go do that.”
