Texas Rangers trade former top pitching prospect to Cincinnati Reds

The Texas Rangers traded right-handed pitcher Owen White to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations, the club announced Monday. He was designated for assignment in December after the Rangers signed left-handed relief pitcher Hoby Milner.

White, 25, is a former top 100 prospect who slumped in each of the last two seasons and couldn’t latch on at the major league level.

The Rangers selected White in the second round of the 2018 MLB draft and he quickly ascended toward the top of Texas’ organizational rankings. He had a 3.06 ERA in his first professional season in 2021, was the league’s No. 61 prospect (according to Baseball America) before the following season and started in the All-Star Futures Game in 2023.

His fastball velocity dropped between his 2023-24 seasons, though, and his effectiveness went with it. White posted a 5.64 ERA in 99 innings at Triple-A Round Rock last season, was moved into the bullpen and allowed eight earned runs in three innings pitched at the major league level.
