Undone by mid-game pitching problems, No. 7 Texas dropped an 8-2 decision on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with No. 2 LSU at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Texas has now lost two consecutive games for the first time this season.

LSU (22-1, 4-0) and Texas (17-3, 3-1) will return to the UT campus on Saturday evening for the second game of this series. That game will begin at 6 p.m.

End 8: LSU 8, Texas 2

Texas is down to its last three outs at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns grounded out three times in the eighth inning.

End 7: LSU 8, Texas 2

The good news for Texas? LSU left-hander Kade Anderson is out of the game after striking out eight batters over a 101-pitch, six-inning start.

The bad news for Texas? The Longhorns couldn’t cut into their deficit against reliever Zac Cowan, who struck out two batters in the seventh inning as Texas stranded two runners. Ethan Mendoza did reach base on an error in the inning, but the infielder’s 14-game hitting streak is in danger of ending.

Mid 7: LSU 8, Texas 2

Did LSU just land a knockout punch The Tigers tagged UT reliever Andre Duplantier II for five hits and four runs during the seventh session as UT’s deficit grew to six runs.

Duplantier, who was pulled with two outs in the frame, had allowed a total of three hits and two runs over the first 12 innings of his season.

Even though things unraveled for Duplantier in his second inning of relief, it took until the inning’s sixth batter for Texas to start throwing anyone in its bullpen. By that point, LSU had recorded four hits and scored twice.

End 6: LSU 4, Texas 2

Rylan Galvan has done it again. With one out in the sixth inning, Galvan homered to right field. Galvan leads Texas this season with his eight homers, and he has gone deep in four of UT’s last five games.

Mid 6: LSU 4, Texas 1

The Tigers threatened to pull away in the sixth inning when they placed two runners aboard with two outs. But Texas reliever Andre Duplantier caught pinch hitter Jake Brown looking at a full-count offering to retire the side.

End 5: LSU 4, Texas 1

Tommy Farmer IV produced a one-out single in the fifth inning, but that was all the offense that UT could muster in the frame. Texas has five hits tonight.

In the top of the sixth inning, Texas will replace starting pitcher Jared Spencer with Andre Duplantier II. While throwing a career-high 96 pitches and striking out seven batters, Spencer allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks.

For Texas fans, the sight of Duplantier on the mound is a welcomed one. Duplantier attempted to enter Tuesday’s game against UTSA, but the senior was pulled after his warm-up pitches.

Mid 5: LSU 4, Texas 1

LSU had added to its lead during an inning that featured three more hits off of UT starter Dylan Spencer. The Tigers scored this inning on Josh Pearson’s sacrifice fly and a RBI single from Luis Hernandez, who has driven in three runs tonight against his former Indiana State teammate.

Texas has announced a crowd of 6,838 for this game.

End 4: LSU 2, Texas 1

Through four innings, Texas has struck out six times against LSU starter Kade Anderson. Anderson has thrown 69 pitches while allowing four hits. He has not walked any Longhorns.

Mid 4: LSU 2, Texas 1

After coming up short in the first three innings, LSU finally got to Texas starter Jared Spencer in the fourth frame. Following a leadoff walk, Spencer gave up a two-run homer to Luis Hernandez that landed in the visitor’s bullpen.

Hernandez and Spencer were teammates at Indiana State the past three seasons.

Through four innings, Spencer has allowed four hits and issued three walks. He has struck out seven batters, and has now registered at least six strikeouts in each of his six starts this season.

End 3: Texas 1, LSU 0

After Max Belyeu extended the third inning with his second infield single of the game, Texas struck first when Jalin Flores looped a two-out pitch from Kade Anderson into left field to score Will Gasparino. Texas has now held a lead in every game this season.

Mid 3: LSU 0, Texas 0

LSU got two runners into scoring position in the third inning, but third baseman Casey Borba and first baseman Kimble Schuessler both made a nice play on a grounder to end the threat. Borba recorded two outs in the inning as LSU wasted its second hit over the evening.

End 2: LSU 0, Texas 0

The Longhorns were retired in order in the second inning. LSU starter Kade Anderson has struck out three of the seven batters he’s faced.

Mid 2: LSU 0, Texas 0

The fourth strikeout of Jared Spencer’s evening got Texas out of a jam for a second straight inning. With a runner on second base following a leadoff single and bunt, Spencer struck out LSU’s Chris Stanfield to end the frame.

End 1: LSU 0, Texas 0

Texas junior Max Belyeu recorded the game’s first hit with one out in the first inning, but that infield single didn’t lead to any runs as Kade Anderson struck out two batters to get LSU back to its dugout.

Mid 1: LSU 0, Texas 0

Texas pitcher Jared Spencer walked two batters in the opening inning but worked around those free passes with strikeouts of Jared Jones, Daniel Dickinson and Steven Milam, who respectively entered today with .424, .368 and .367 batting averages. Spencer threw 25 pitches in the first frame.
