Even those who are unbiased believe Oklahoma’s Kyson Witherspoon is the best pitcher in college baseball right now.
D1Baseball on Friday released its new rankings of the 150 best starting pitchers through six weeks of the college baseball season. Witherspoon, a right-handed junior, took over the top spot.
Three other pitchers from the SEC were included in the top five. Witherspoon was joined by Kade Anderson (LSU), Jamie Arnold (Florida State), Liam Doyle (Tennessee) and Pico Kohn (Mississippi State), respectively, to make up the top five.

Witherspoon entered the season with extremely high expectations and has still managed to exceed them as the No. 9 Sooners’ Friday starter all season. He was named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list and the Preseason All-SEC Second Team. That second-team status now seems like a knock.
In six starts this season, Witherspoon is 5-1 with an outstanding 1.80 ERA. He just suffered his first loss last week to Mississippi State, but still gave up just one earned run in 6.2 innings. He also struck out 11 in the loss.
Witherspoon has tallied 58 strikeouts compared to seven walks in 35 innings this season. His strikeout total ranks second in the SEC and third in the country.
This success also has Witherspoon’s MLB Draft stock skyrocketing. He’s likely a first-round pick and considered by many as the top prospect in the SEC.
This is Witherspoon’s second season in Norman. He led the Sooners with a 3.71 ERA last season in 11 starts and 80 innings.
Witherspoon and his brother, Malachi, both transferred from Northwest Florida State College in 2023. Malachi has also solidified himself in OU’s weekend rotation but has struggled some with a 5.13 ERA and 2-1 record.
Witherspoon will be back in action next on Friday night against No. 12 Alabama to begin a three-game top-15 SEC series for the Sooners.
