WASHINGTON — The 2027 NFL draft is heading to the nation’s capital, a person familiar with the details told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because President Trump is set to make the announcement on Monday at the White House.
Washington hosting the draft two years from now is the latest off-field victory for the Commanders, a week since they reached an agreement with the D.C. government to build a stadium on the old RFK site. That is still pending council approval. Last week, the team announced it had struck a deal with the District of Columbia to return the team to Washington at the old RFK Stadium site ─ which will be rebuilt from the ground up. The deal still needs approval from DC Council.
The team under new ownership, Josh Harris’ group that bought the team from Dan Snyder in 2023, has been trying to land the draft for multiple years, losing out to Detroit and Green Bay.
“Our first choice was always RFK because we knew that the stadium was getting older, and we knew we were going to have to do something with it,” Harris told WUSA9. “We could always have stayed in our existing site. We own that site. In many ways, that would’ve been easier for us. But we really felt that being the center of DMV, being in D.C., being in the spiritual home where the team had won so many Super Bowls, being a part of the D.C. community and being in the location which made it the easiest for all of our fans, not just our fans and one jurisdiction or another, we always thought that was the right answer.”
The president is expected to make the announcement Monday at 1 p.m. from the Oval Office.
