AUSTIN, Texas — We’re down to eight teams in the College Football Playoff.
The Texas Longhorns have the best odds of winning the national title, according to FanDuel.
But some matchups are better than others.
Here are the teams remaining in the College Football Playoff – ranked in order of degree of difficulty – for the Longhorns with the No. 1 team being the opponent that poses the greatest challenge for the Longhorns in their quest for a national title:
No. 7 – Arizona State
Texas’ CFP quarterfinal against the fourth-seeded Sun Devils (11-2) in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Jan. 1 at 12 pm CT (on ESPN) will be a mini-reunion with seven former Longhorns, including cornerbacks coach Bryan Carrington, who served as recruiting director at Texas under Tom Herman.
Running back Cam Skattebo is the lifeblood of the Arizona State offense, rushing for 1,568 yards (6.0 ypc) and 19 touchdowns with 37 receptions for 506 yards and three TDs through the air.
Skattebo has been held under 100 yards rushing five times this season, including in both of ASU’s losses (at Texas Tech and at Cincinnati). But Skattebo has had two 100-yard receiving games, and he’ll even operate some “Wild-Skat” quarterback (primarily in short-yardage and in the red zone).
ASU is without injured leading receiver Jordyn Tyson (75 catches, 1,101 yards, 10 TDs), who commanded some double coverage. Redshirt freshman dual-threat quarterback Sam Leavitt (24 TDs, 5 INTs) is a warrior who has helped ASU win six one-score games.
ASU’s defense, which struggles to get pressure on the quarterback, is solid against the run, giving up just 117.5 yards per game on the ground (No. 28 in FBS). But the Sun Devils’ pass defense is vulnerable, giving up 219.4 ypg (No. 70 in FBS) with sophomore cornerback Keith Abney (five TDs given up and seven penalties), who wears No. 1, the most targeted DB on the defense.
