‘This is where I am supposed to be’: Washburn Rural’s Maddie Vickery makes college decision

TOPEKA — When Maddie Vickery watched film with Kansas State head coach Jeff Mittie, she knew it was the right the place. Mittie showed the Washburn Rural sophomore how she would fit into his style of play and Vickery was sold.

Vickery is one of the top sophomore basketball players in the state and she resides in the capital city. Washburn Rural’s Maddie Vickery has helped the Junior Blues to a 4-1 start and now she knows where she will be playing her college basketball.

On Saturday, Vickery announced her commitment to Kansas State. The 6-foot-1 forward has been a standout performer for the Junior Blues in her first two seasons.

“The entire staff has welcomed me,” Vickery said to the Capital-Journal. “They have all made the effort to genuinely get to know me, my parents, my brother and my grandparents when they were in town. It really is all of this wrapped up together that just gave me complete confidence that this is where I am supposed to be.”

Vickery chose Kansas State over a host of other schools. She received offers from TCU, Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, just to name a few. The opportunity to play close to home helped her choose the Wildcats, too.

“My family is really important to me and to know this gives them and my friends the opportunity to come watch us play, which is awesome,” Vickery said.

The Junior Blues are off to a great start where they are the No. 4 ranked team in Class 6A. She’s coming off of a 19-point performance where Washburn Rural defeated No. 3 Shawnee Mission Northwest 59-38 on Tuesday.

“I am really excited to focus on basketball, playing, improving and enjoying my high school and AAU teammates while I get myself ready to be a Wildcat,” Vickery said.
