Thursday was the final day for major league teams to come to agreement with the arbitration eligible players. The Tigers announced terms with most of those players as of this writing, presumably with more to follow as word leaks out. The biggest of these was an agreement on a $10.15 million contract for 2025 for AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal.
That mark is significantly higher than some projections estimated, but being the best pitcher in the game has its privileges. We don’t know if the two parties are still engaged on extension talks or not after reports from early in the offseason suggested they were very far apart in terms. Still, there’s little point going to battle against your best player so it’s a positive that this is handled and out of the way.
Skubal will be arbitration eligible again next year before reaching free agency for the 2027 season.
Earlier in the day, the Tigers agreed to a $2.34 million contract for Casey Mize, avoiding arbitration. This comes after some contention last time around in coming up with Mize’s figure for 2024. Anything could happen, but right now the Tigers seem to expect Mize to be in the starting rotation again in 2025.
Jake Rogers and the Tigers settled for $2.64 million in 2025. The Tigers have one more year of team control over their starting catcher. He’ll be a free agent for the 2027 season, as will Mize.
Matt Vierling and the Tigers agreed to a deal worth $3.005 million for 2025. The 28-year-old utilityman won’t be a free agent until 2028.
Finally, the Tigers came to terms with two relievers. Will Vest will earn $1.4 million in 2025. Jason Foley will make $3.15 million. Both are free agents in 2028.
Beau Brieske is arbitration eligible for the first time, but no agreement has been announced as of this writing. Andy Ibáñez agreed to a $1.4 million contract previously, while Zach McKinstry agreed for $1.65 million. We’ll update this article if other contracts are announced.
