As the 2024 college football season continues into October, we’re tracking all the teams that are still in contention for a perfect season.
Through Week 9, only 8 FBS teams remain undefeated. The Big Ten leads the way with three unbeaten teams, followed by the Big 12, ACC and with two and the American with one. The SEC lost its final undefeated team after Georgia took down Texas in Week 8.
The ranking lists teams in the latest AP Top 25 poll.
WEEK 8 RECAP: Georgia takes down Texas, Tennessee beats Alabama and more
No. 1 Oregon
Record: 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Illinois, 38-9
Last undefeated season: 1916 (7-0-1, won Rose Bowl)
The Ducks remain untouchable with a Week 9 rout over Illinois. Oregon took a little while to get out of the gate this season, but Dan Lanning’s squad seems to have found its groove after taking down Ohio State in Week 7. The Ducks stayed hot in Week 8, rolling over a one-win Purdue team. With a blowout win over Illinois under their belts, the Ducks will make the trip to the Big House on Nov. 2. This two-game stretch includes the last two ranked games on Oregon’s schedule, and if the Ducks make it out unscathed, they should be playing for the Big Ten championship in December.
No. 3 Penn State
Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Wisconsin, 28-13
Last undefeated season: 1994 (12-0, won Rose Bowl)
The Nittany Lions once again rallied after an early deficit and took down Wisconsin for a Week 9 win. James Franklin’s squad displayed resilience in Week 7, storming back from a 20-6 halftime deficit to take down Southern California 33-30 in overtime. The Nittany Lions will have their toughest test of the season next week at home against Ohio State as they will look to take down the Buckeyes for the first time since 2016.

No. 5 Miami (Fla.)
Record: 8-0 (4-0 ACC)
Last game: Defeated Florida State, 36-14
Last undefeated season: 2001 (12-0, won BCS National Championship Game)
The Canes cruised past their in-state rivals Florida State to the tune of 66,000 fans to keep their winning streak alive in Week 9. The week before, Miami survived a shootout against Louisville to move to 7-0. Cam Ward carried the load in the air with 319 yards and four touchdowns on 21 completions. Next up, the Canes host Duke on Nov. 2.
No. 9 BYU
Record: 8-0 (5-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated UCF, 37-24
Last undefeated season: 1984 (13-0, won national championship)
After a rough first season in the Big 12, the Cougars have already surpassed their conference win total from 2023. They have two ranked wins under their belt in Kansas State and SMU, and Kalani Sitake’s squad squeezed out a thriller against Oklahoma State in Week 8. The Cougars defended their perfect record at UCF for a Week 9 win. BYU will hit the road again to play at Utah on Nov. 9.
No. 11 Iowa State
Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated UCF, 38-35
Last undefeated season: N/A
This may not be a team one would expect to see here, but Iowa State has been playing good football. The Cyclones are ranked for the first time since 2021 this season and are coming off a close win against UCF. Matt Campbell’s team secured its first 6-0 start since 1938 in Week 7, and after beating UCF in Week 8, the Cyclones face Texas Tech on Nov. 2.
No. 13 Indiana

Indiana further proved itself in Week 9, defeating Washington, 31-17. Despite the spotlight on the team by ESPN’s College Gameday, Curt Cignetti kept his Hoosiers focused and remained perfect on the year. Indiana will travel to Michigan State next year as it marches toward a potential appearance in the Big Ten title game.
No. 18 Pittsburgh
Record: 7-0 (3-0 ACC)
Last game: Defeated Syracuse, 41-13
Last undefeated season: 1976 (12-0, won national championship)
The Panthers are coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2023, but transfer redshirt freshman Eli Holstein has lit a fire in this Pitt team. He’s thrown for 1,808 yards and 17 touchdowns in seven games, securing close wins against Cincinnati, West Virginia and California in Week 7. Pitt will travel to SMU on Nov. 2.

The Black Knights are averaging more than 38 points per game, and believe it or not, Army holds the longest win streak in FBS football at 11. Based on its first seven games, Army should be cruising until Nov. 23 against Notre Dame. The Irish have proven beatable, and if the Black Knights can pull it off, we could be discussing Army in the 12-team playoff come late November.
