Trevor Story Prepared To Be Red Sox Resource For Alex Bregman

Alex Bregman is expected to switch positions with the Red Sox, and he’ll have a teammate who has first-hand experience of that transition.

Boston officially signed the 30-year-old to a three-year deal Saturday. The All-Star infielder quickly got acquainted with the clubhouse when he arrived in Fort Myers, Fla., on Friday. One person he met right away was Trevor Story, who recruited him and had dinner with him and Alex Cora.

Story switched to second base in his first season with the Red Sox and explained why Bregman could also make the transition if he and the two-time World Series champion are paired up in the middle infield.

“We’ll see,” Story told reporters, as seen on NESN. “We’re gonna see how the infield is going to be aligned, but if that’s the case — I did play second my first year here — he’s kind of a shortstop at heart back in his LSU days. I think if you just take that mentality anywhere you’re playing in the infield, it will serve you well. For me, that’s the way I did it and just try to stay as athletic as possible. No matter where you’re playing out, I think that’s what plays. He’s really good at that. Obviously, he’s got the gold to show for it.”

Story noted there were small details he adjusted to, and Bregman’s “baseball rat” mentality will help him if he moves to second base; Cora was non-commital about where the veteran would slot in the field. Bregman did work on double plays from shortstop and second base Saturday, so there wasn’t any time wasted trying to build chemistry with Story.

Bregman will speak for the first time in a news conference Sunday. His agent Scott Boras, team president Sam Kennedy, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and Cora also will be available. NESN will air the news conference live at 8:30 a.m. ET.
