Twins to sign reliever Danny Coulombe to 1-year deal: Sources

The Minnesota Twins have finally agreed to sign a major-league free agent, reuniting with left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe on a one-year, $3 million contract, according to league sources. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes performance bonuses.

The addition helps the Twins, one of two teams that had yet to sign a free agent to a big-league deal this offseason, round out what’s expected to be a stellar bullpen by filling its lone void, a lefty.

Coulombe, 35, went 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings for the Baltimore Orioles last season. He underwent surgery in June to remove bone chips from his left elbow and missed three months of the season, but returned in September and made four scoreless appearances. He joined the Orioles in March 2023 after opting out of a minor-league deal with the Twins during spring training, posting a 2.81 ERA over 51 1/3 innings that season and producing 1.4 WAR, according to FanGraphs.

Prior to his time with Baltimore, Coulombe spent three seasons with the Twins, accruing a 2.92 ERA in 49 1/3 innings from 2020-22.

Aside from the departure of veteran lefty Caleb Thielbar, the Twins’ bullpen remains largely unchanged from the end of the 2024 season. The Twins are adding Coulombe to a group that includes Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Cole Sands and Jorge Alcala.

The team also will enter spring training with the belief that Brock Stewart and Justin Topa are healthy. Additionally, Michael Tonkin was brought back to fill a multi-inning role for the Twins. And, though they still need to make sure their starting rotation is healthy, it’s expected Louie Varland will also pitch out of the bullpen this season.
