Two Royals prospects make Baseball America’s top 100 list

Baseball America released its top 100 prospect list for 2025 with two Royals ranked – Jac Caglianone at #63 and Blake Mitchell at #75. Other Royals prospects who received at least one vote from Baseball America writers include catcher Carter Jensen and pitcher David Shields. Caglianone was ranked #48 and Mitchell ranked #99 on the list Baseball America produced last September. Last January, the Royals did not have a single player on the list.

Royals prospect rankings on Baseball America’s top 100 list

  • January 2021 – Bobby Witt Jr. (#16), Daniel Lynch IV (#25), Asa Lacy (#37), Jackson Kowar (#95)
  • January 2022 – Bobby Witt Jr. (#3), MJ Melendez (#42), Nick Pratto (#43)
  • January 2023 – Gavin Cross (#97)
  • September 2023 – None
  • January 2024 – None
  • September 2024 – Jac Caglianone (#48), Blake Mitchell (#99)

Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki ranked #1, which seems a bit against the spirit of “prospect” status. Red Sox outfield Roman Anthony is ranked second, followed by Tigers pitcher Jackson Jobe, Red Sox second baseman Kristian Campbell, and Twins outfielder Walker Jenkins. The Mariners have the most players on the list with seven while three teams have just one prospect listed – the Astros, Giants, and Blue Jays.

Caglianone was the sixth overall pick in the 2024 draft out of the University of Florida. The first baseman hit .241/.302/.388 in 29 games at High-A, then hit .236/.300/.449 with five home runs in 21 games in the Arizona Fall League. He was drafted as a two-way player, but the Royals will not have him pitch this year so he can focus on hitting.

Mitchell was the eighth overall pick in the 2023 draft out of high school in Texas. This past year he hit .238/.376/.439 with 18 home runs and 25 steals with 79 walks in 106 games for Low-A Columbia. The 20-year-old left-handed catcher was ranked as the #94 on MLB Pipeline’s prospect list and was #96 by Baseball Prospectus before the 2024 season. Both players were invited to big league camp for spring training.

MLB Pipeline will reveal their 2025 prospect list tomorrow evening at 6 CT on MLB Network.
