U-M Suffers First Loss of Season vs. No. 22 TCU to Open College Baseball Series – University of Michigan Athletics

ARLINGTON, Texas — The University of Michigan baseball team took its first loss of the season, falling 10-4 to No. 22-ranked TCU in the opener of the College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field on Friday afternoon (Feb. 21).

Michigan (4-1) was led offensively by Mitch Voit and Jonathan Kim. Voit hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast in the first inning, and scored again in the eighth. Kim had multiple hits for the fifth straight game, tallying three including a double and an RBI. Cole Caruso also collected an extra-base hit with an RBI double and scored in the second inning. On the mound, starter Dylan Vigue went 5.1 innings, striking out three and allowing just one earned run and two hits but walked seven. Cade Connolly (0-1) took the loss in relief after allowing a hit and a run over 0.1 innings.

TCU (4-0) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk and a two-base wild pitch, the runner scored from third when U-M turned a double play. Vigue forced a flyout to end the inning down 1-0.

The Wolverines responded in the bottom half with Jeter Ybarra reaching on a two-out single. Voit came to the plate and homered to right-center field to put Michigan in front 2-1. The Wolverines added a run in the second inning when Caruso led off with a double and came around to score on a two-out single from Kim to take a two-run advantage.

Both pitchers settled in after the second inning and allowed just six baserunners combined in the third through fifth innings.

The Horned Frogs grabbed the lead in the sixth, scoring four times with two outs to take a 5-3 advantage. TCU scored again in the seventh when a nit-by-pitch and triple nudged its lead to 6-3.

The Maize and Blue got a run back in the eighth when Voit’s leadoff walk was followed by a groundout and wild pitch to advance him to third. He scored when Caruso reached on an error. TCU added four runs in the top of the ninth thanks to a pair of two-run homers to bring the score to its final margin.

Michigan will be back on the field on Saturday (Feb. 22) when they take on Kansas State at 2 p.m. CST at Globe Life Field. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
