Devin Williams exit begins UCLA basketball roster changes for next season.
The college basketball transfer portal officially opened on Monday. Several hundred players immediately entered. Over 1,500 players are expected to ultimately enter the portal. UCLA basketball will be part of this massive change in college hoops rosters this offseason. One player has already entered the transfer portal: Devin Williams.
Some UCLA players revealed their limitations this past season. Williams belongs in a separate category: He redshirted. We can all sit here and wonder how different UCLA would have been if Williams played extensively this past season. We can similarly wonder what UCLA would have looked like next season if Williams stayed in the program. Now we won’t ever know on that front. Williams will go elsewhere to try to get playing time.
It will be fascinating to see how many Bruins ultimately do leave the program through the portal, and how well Mick Cronin is able to fill in various roster slots. Talent acquisition is priority number one as Cronin and the Bruins try to create a roster which can legitimately compete for a Big Ten championship, a Final Four, and elite status in men’s college basketball. UCLA’s lack of elite quality was exposed and magnified in a decisive loss to Tennessee in the Round of 32 of March Madness. The Vols had high-end players and superb depth, the kinds of ingredients UCLA’s roster was largely missing. Cronin has to build back the Bruins if this program is to return to the heights it is expected to reach on a regular basis.
