Under Sampson’s leadership, the 2024-25 Cougars enjoyed a historic season that saw the team reach the NCAA men’s basketball tournament final, losing a nailbiter to Florida.

During the 2024-25 campaign, Sampson was also recognized as The Sporting News and CBS Sports National Coach of the Year and was named the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

“It is hard to truly put into words what Kelvin Sampson has meant to our men’s basketball program, our Athletics Department, our University and our greater Houston community,” Nuñez said. “His success as a coach on the court is even more impressive when considering the tremendous impact he has had on the many young men to come through our program.”
