UNC basketball wing announces transfer portal destination

Will Cade Tyson re-discover his groove in the Big 10?

The North Carolina Tar Heels had a lot of hope for transfer commitment Cade Tyson during 2024-2025 basketball season, with the then-Belmont transfer providing some much-needed perimeter shooting in Chapel Hill.

Unfortunately, Tyson never lived up to his offseason hype and quickly slid down the Tar Heels’ depth chart, forcing his entry into the transfer portal. Tyson averaged just 2.6 points per game, coming off the bench in all 31 of his appearances, with Tyson’s best effort a 23-point outing against La Salle in December.

With Drake Powell’s NBA Draft declaration, the path for Tyson to starting minutes became clear. With North Carolina recently adding international wing Luka Bogovac, Tyson’s path to starting minutes became non-existent.

On Sunday, Tyson announced he’ll be playing his final season of college basketball for Ben Johnson and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

If Minnesota sounds familiar, that’s because Tyson is the second former Tar Heel to commit there. Dawson Garcia, who played at UNC during his 2021-2022 season, transferred to the Golden Gophers after that lone year in Chapel Hill.

Minnesota hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2019, but its hope is Tyson returns to his Belmont form, where he averaged 14.9 points per game across two seasons.

Behind Bogavac, North Carolina is still thin at small forward. I’m willing to bet 6-foot-6, shooting guard Jonathan Powell splits minutes at the 3-spot, though, while there’s also a chance the Tar Heels add more portal players.

Tyson was the second UNC player announcing his next transfer portal destination on Sunday, with Lubin committing to NC State.
