Updating Clemson baseball in college polls after Cal series sweep

CLEMSON — Clemson baseball rose from No. 7 to No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll released on Monday.

The Tigers (30-5, 9-3 ACC) received 644 points and no first-place votes. They are the highest ranked ACC team, surpassing No. 8 Florida State after it lost its weekend series.

Clemson, which was picked to finish fourth in the ACC baseball preseason poll, reentered the top 5 after sweeping Cal this past weekend. It is the only ACC team to win each conference series this season and is on track to host an NCAA regional for the third straight season.

Clemson looks to maintain its stature this week when it faces Gardner-Webb on Wednesday (6 p.m. ET, ACC Network Extra) at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Then it will host Stanford in a three-game weekend series.

Arkansas is the No. 1 team in the coaches poll, earning 745 points and 26 first-place votes. No. 2 Texas and No. 4 Tennessee, last year’s national champion, also received at least one first-place vote.

Five other ACC schools made the Top 25: FSU (8), North Carolina (No. 13), Louisville (16), Georgia Tech (18) and Wake Forest (20).

The USA TODAY Sports Board of Coaches poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of made up of 30 head coaches at Division I institutions.
