The good news is there are still only three options to pick from. The bad news is, if you were a fan of Wasatch, that name is no longer an option.
The Utah Hockey Club announced on Thursday that it is replacing Wasatch with Outlaws as the final of three options fans can choose from in a vote for the team’s name.
Utah released a statement explaining the decision was based survey data.
“It’s clear that Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we’re swapping it out.”
Fans will also get to pick between two possible logos. The voting will be done by fans who attend Utah’s next four home games, beginning Thursday (vs. Pittsburgh) through Feb. 4 (vs. Philadelphia).
Stations will be set up around Delta Center to select a name and logo, not yet publicly revealed for copyright protection. Asked if he was worried someone would take a photo and leak details, Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan pointed to Utah Jazz redesigns that stayed private while going through a similar process, adding, “We have faith in the community… to do this in a respectful way.”
Regardless of how the vote shakes out, it’s important to Utah owners Ryan and Ashley Smith that fans ultimately determine the name and logo. “Whether this is the final part of the process or there is to be one more (vote), is to be determined,” Maughan said.
