Vince Marrow sends message to college football’s bluebloods in first Louisville press conference

Marrow is joining the Cardinals staff after many years at rival Kentucky.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Vince Marrow had a clear message for some of college football’s big name programs Friday: the University of Louisville is coming.

Marrow was introduced to the media as UofL’s new executive director of player personnel and recruiting, having spent the last 12 years at Kentucky. He’ll play a key role in identifying and pitching high school prospects, which has always been his calling card.

He believes the Cardinals are building something special under head coach Jeff Brohm.

“It can be Kentucky, it can be Michigan, it can be Miami, I don’t care,” Marrow said. “You better be ready and prepared to deal with us now. I really believe we’re going to take this to another level.”

The move was announced earlier this month and promises to add another layer to the UofL-UK rivalry. Marrow was most recently an associate head coach and tight ends coach for the Wildcats, and was responsible for landing some of the biggest recruits of the Mark Stoops era.

So why make the move? Marrow said his yearslong relationship with Brohm played a big role.

“I have so much respect for Jeff and I wouldn’t have done this anywhere else,” Marrow said. “And for the record, I wasn’t kicked out the door at the place up the street. It was just a situation to work with a good friend. He’s the right guy to work with at this part of my coaching career.”

Marrow also said this opportunity allows him to remain in the state of Kentucky, which was important to him and his family.

Brohm said he and Marrow had many friendly conversations over the years. He feels his staff is “fired up” to have Marrow on board.

“He has a tremendous reputation around the country as a coach and a recruiter,” Brohm said. “He’s someone who can build relationships with players and their families, and it’s genuine. He has a great gift to bring people in and make them feel welcome and come through for them to achieve their goals.”

Marrow said he was performing similar tasks at UK over the past couple seasons despite being an on-field position coach. He said college football is becoming more like the professional ranks, and many college programs have added general manager-like roles.

Marrow plans to be as relentless in recruiting as ever.

“When I go and recruit, it doesn’t matter if my mother is over there recruiting,” he said. “I’m going to try to beat the crap outta you.”
