For Maddy DeCou, the chance to coach for the college basketball team where she played was too good an opportunity to pass up.
So the head coach of the Washington-Liberty Generals girls high-school hoop team the past two seasons made the tough decision. She stepped down, accepting a job as an assistant coach in the same sport for Arlington’s nearby Division III Marymount University women’s team.
“I’m really excited about this, but it was the hardest decision I’ve had to make as an adult,” DeCou told ARLnow. “I could have coached at Washington-Liberty forever. But to coach for my alma mater will be so cool.”
DeCou graduated from Marymount in 2020. She played for former Marymount head coach Ashlee Rogers.
Marymount’s current head coach is Claire Mattox, who grew up in Arlington. DeCou and Mattox met in recent years playing adult-league basketball.
“I really like the direction Marymount is headed under her,” DeCou said.
Washington-Liberty enjoyed two winning seasons under DeCou, finishing 17-9 this past season, second in the Liberty District tournament as the No. 2 seed and winning a holiday tourney in December.
The 17 wins were the Generals’ most in many years.
The season before, W-L finished 11-10 and also was the second seed in the district tourney.
“She had a lot of success in terms of making the program relevant in the district and region in a short time,” Washington-Liberty director of student activities Justin Bolfek said.
Prior to being W-L’s head coach, DeCou was an assistant with the team for one season. She was the head girls coach at Annandale High School before joining the Washington-Liberty staff.
DeCou played basketball at Boiling Springs High School in Pennsylvania.
Bolfek said those interested in applying for the W-L girls coaching job can contact him at [email protected] for information.
