Washington Football Boasts Highest Win Percentage in Big Ten Against Ranked Opponents

Since 2021, no Big Ten football program has a higher winning percentage against ranked teams than Washington. The Huskies have boasted a 68.8 win percentage over the last four seasons, much of which is credited to former coach Kalen DeBoer, who led the program to its only national championship appearance in the College Football Playoff era in 2023.

UW lost its only ranked contest in 2021 at Husky Stadium against then-No. 4 Oregon in ex-coach Jimmy Lake’s final season at the helm of the program, but went on to win ten straight games against teams ranked in the top 25 under DeBoer — five of which came combined against Oregon and Texas.

Under DeBoer, who finished his brief two-year tenure as UW’s coach with a 25-3 overall record, the program saw a return to glory with the now-Alabama coach leading the team to a Pac-12 Championship victory, Alamo Bowl and Sugar Bowl wins over the Longhorns, plus a trio of signature victories over rival Oregon that won’t soon be forgotten in UW fandom.

However, the end of DeBoer’s run as UW coach also brought the end of the double-digit run of wins against ranked teams with a 34-13 loss to Michigan in the title game.

His replacement — current Huskies’ coach Jedd Fisch — made sure that didn’t result in a reverse run with a 27-17 victory over the No. 10 ranked Wolverines at Husky Stadium last season to put the record against ranked teams at 11-2, before losing three straight road games against top 15 programs — at No. 13 Indiana, at No. 4 Penn State and at No. 1 Oregon to end the regular season and the record against ranked teams at 11-5 over the last four seasons.

This fall, the expectation is that Fisch and UW will have at least two ranked opponents on the schedule — Ohio State and Oregon — with both games at Husky Stadium, giving the program a chance to build out its success against teams ranked in the top 25 even more with Demond Williams Jr. leading the charge at quarterback.
