Washington Football dubbed College Football Playoff sleepers

During Jedd Fisch’s first season at the helm with the Washington Huskies, his team went 6-7, but look like they could be one of the biggest risers in college football in 2025.

On3’s Ari Wasserman agrees, naming the Huskies among his Big Ten and SEC teams that could shake up the College Football playoff race in 2025.

With running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston returning to give promising quarterback Demond Williams Jr. two of the best players at their respective positions in the country to rely on, the Huskies could wind up with one of the best offenses in the Big Ten thanks to Fisch’s scheme. Combined with an improved offensive line, Washington is in a much better position offensively coming into this season.

Defensively, Fisch made the necessary investments to prepare for life in the Big Ten, adding three defensive linemen and three linebackers from the transfer portal to beef up the front seven, while also pulling in arguably the nation’s top cornerback in Tacario Davis.

“In college football, we have a tendency to think what happened last year is permanent and nothing is changing,” Wasserman wrote. “The irony, of course, is that nothing changes as rapidly as teams do in today’s college football. Yes, Jedd Fisch had a rough go of it in his first season at Washington last year, but is he all of a sudden a terrible coach? Of course not.”

“Washington has one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the country in Demond Williams, which opens the door of possibility. If Washington takes a similar leap as Arizona did in year two under Fisch’s leadership, Washington has a chance at being much better than people expect. It has to play Oregon, Ohio State, and Michigan this year, but if the Huskies find a way to win one of those? You may have something interesting in November.”

Unlike 2024, where Washington had to go on the road to play three College Football Playoff teams: Indiana, Oregon, and Penn State, the toughest teams on their schedule will all have to come to Husky Stadium.

While road trips to Maryland, Michigan, and Wisconsin might prove to be difficult, Fisch’s team should be viewed as a team ready to take a step forward in 2025.
