A first-of-its-kind Big Ten baseball tournament comes to a close on Sunday.
A tournament that began with 12 teams broken up into four pool groups is down to its final two teams in UCLA and Nebraska who are set to meet on the diamond at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 25 at Charles Schwarb Field in Omaha, Nebraska in the conference championship game.
Not only are the Bruins and Cornhuskers playing for their first/second straight Big Ten title on Sunday, respectively, but they are also playing for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament. UCLA swept the regular season series against Nebraska back in early March.
To make its first Big Ten title game since moving over from the Pac-12 over the last offseason, UCLA, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, won Pool B play with victories against Illinois and Michigan. The Bruins then defeated No. 3 seed Iowa 9-3 in the semifinals behind a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBIs, two doubles, a home run and two runs scored from Roch Cholowsky.
As for Nebraska, the Cornhuskers ran the table in Pool A play by first picking up a win against No. 12 seed Michigan State before upsetting top overall seed Oregon. The Cornhuskers pushed through No. 9 seed Penn State in the semifinals to play for the right to become the first back-to-back Big Ten champion since Indiana in 2013 and 2014.
