5 men’s NCAA baseball tournament players to watch
The Mongomery Advertiser’s Adam Cole and The Tennesseean’s Aria Gerson break down the top players to watch in the men’s NCAA baseball tournament.
The College World Series continues on Father’s Day with the first elimination game of the two-week tournament.
The two teams looking to continue their seasons with an elimination bracket win also happen to be two of the four unseeded teams in Omaha: Louisville and Arizona.
The Cardinals and Wildcats kick off Day 3 competition at Charles Schwab Field Omaha with a 2 p.m. ET first pitch on June 15 in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Cardinals appeared to have gained the momentum to steal their CWS opening game vs. No. 8 Oregon State after tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth with two runs, but Louisville fell into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth. Louisville was walked off by Oregon State on a double down the left field line, putting them in the elimination bracket.
As for Arizona, the Wildcats were in a tightly-knit, back-and-forth game with No. 13 Coastal Carolina through the first eight innings of action. An RBI double from Coastal Carolina’s Wells Sykes broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth, and was followed up with another extra-base hit that scored two more runs. A positive for Chip Hale’s squad was catcher Adonys Guzman, who finished 3 for 4 at the plate with a run.
The winner of Louisville vs. Arizona will advance further in the elimination bracket of the CWS, while the loser will be sent home from Omaha with a 0-2 record.
