Tom Izzo is inching closer to his favorite month of the men’s college basketball season.
But before the Hall of Fame coach can get there, his eighth-ranked Michigan State Spartans (22-5, 13-3 in Big Ten) will have to face No. 15 Maryland (21-6, 11-5 in Big Ten) on Wednesday in their third straight contest against a top 20 ranked team.
Michigan State and Maryland are set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland in a pivotal game for both teams’ chances of winning (either outright or a share of) the Big Ten regular season crown.

The Spartans are tied with No. 13 Michigan in the Big Ten standings (and a two-game lead over the Terrapins) for first place and that top overall seed in next month’s conference tournament at 13-13 in league play.
Jase Richardson led Michigan State with 21 points, six rebounds and three steals in their most recent win over Michigan — the Spartans’ second straight win over top 15 ranked opponents.
Maryland has won eight of its last nine games, making Kevin Willard’s squad a late-season dark horse team in the Big Ten and the country. Led by star freshman center Derik Queen, the Terrapins are projected as a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament, per ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
