What former Notre Dame basketball standout will return as the program’s new GM?

SOUTH BEND – In what has become a new world in college basketball, the Notre Dame men’s and women’s programs have turned to an old face.

Pat Garrity, a 1998 Notre Dame graduate, has been hired by athletic director Pete Bevacqua as the general manager of the men’s and women’s programs. He is the first person at Notre Dame to hold the title for either program. Garrity also will serve as the primary sports administrator for coach Micah Shrewsberry’s program.

“I’m thrilled to be back at Notre Dame,” Garrity said Tuesday in a university press release announcing the move. “At every point in my career and life, Notre Dame has always been a second home for me and my family. The University has shaped who I am, and its values resonate deeply within me.”

Being back at Notre Dame will be nothing new for Garrity and his wife, Paula. Their son, Henry, is a junior tight end on the Notre Dame football team.

A native of Monument, Colorado, the 48-year-old Garrity has the chance to help shape the direction of a Notre Dame men’s program that has not gone to the NCAA Tournament since 2022 and has staggered through three straight losing seasons, the longest stretch since 1917-23.

“I’m excited to partner with Pat to continue executing our vision for Notre Dame basketball,” Shrewsberry said in a university statement. “His experience in roster building and management in the NBA will be a handy guide for how we go about positioning our program for long-term success.”

A second team All-American in 1998 and the 1997 Big East player of the year, Garrity scored 2,085 points, which ranks fifth in Notre Dame history. He was a first-round pick (19th overall) in the 1998 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. His draft rights, and those of future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki, were traded to Dallas on draft night. Garrity then was traded again, to Phoenix, where he played his rookie year.

Garrity played nine seasons for Orlando before retiring in 2008. He averaged 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 552 career NBA games.

Following his NBA career, Garrity served in the front office of the Detroit Pistons before leaving professional basketball in 2020.
