Rafael Devers found himself in familiar territory Thursday afternoon.
Much to his chagrin, Devers in spring training had to talk about the Red Sox moving him from third base to designated hitter in wake of Alex Bregman’s arrival. Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury produced a similar situation, as an irked Devers made it clear he wasn’t interested in relocating to first base.
Some might have thought that the three-time All-Star’s unwillingness to change positions again could cause friction in Boston’s clubhouse. But as he made his preference abundantly clear after the Red Sox’s third shutout win of the season, Devers poured cold water on that theory.
“Here in the clubhouse, thankfully, the relationship that I have with my teammates is great,” Devers told reporters through translator, per MassLive.
Quite frankly, Red Sox players have more important things to worry about than Devers’ position stance. Chief among those objectives is maximizing the high level of talent on the roster, finding a groove and stringing wins together for the first time this year.
