After the remarkable showing with the 4 Nations Face-Off, how can the NHL go back to an All-Star game format?
After years of having no best-on-best competition in the NHL, everyone’s dreams were finally fulfilled with the 4 Nations Face-Off. It’s safe to say it went better than anyone could’ve imagined or asked for. It was intense, fun, and entertaining to watch, and it renewed the rivalry between Canada and the United States, plus Sweden and Finland.
The players were thrilled, and with their level of competition, it was clear this was more than just an in-season tournament. They played like it was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final or the Gold Medal game of the Olympics, and everyone loved it. It gave the NHL the breath of fresh air it desperately needed, and hopefully, there will be more in the years to come.
This was held in place of the regular All-Star game, and while that event has been successful in the past, this tournament was better. With the NHL allowing players to compete in the Olympics next year and bringing back the World Cup in 2028, what happens to the All-Star game and the 4 Nations in the future?
The NHL is still holding an All-Star game before the Olympics in 2026, but what about after that? Should the NHL keep the All-Star game around, should it be replaced, or can they have a happy mix of both?
The All-Star Game Needs to be Changed
Everyone has heard it over the years: the All-Star game has become a shell of what it used to be. To the league’s credit, they have tried to make changes and make it more appealing. Instead of the traditional 5-on-5 Western Conference against Eastern Conference that was done for years, they split it into four teams with celebrity captains choosing their teams and then competing in 3-on-3 action. It’s been held in different formats over the seasons, and while it’s gained attention, it hasn’t been the same.
