Georgia baseball will have to claw back after a loss in the double-elimination Athens Regional.
The national seventh-seeded Bulldogs (43-16) find themselves in that predicament on Sunday June 1, after Duke lefty Kyle Johnson held Georgia down in a 6-3 Blue Devils win on Saturday.
Oklahoma State (29-24) is fresh off a game where it clubbed seven homers, two shy of a tournament record.
Duke’s Johnson entered with 23 walks and 33 strikeouts and a 6.75 ERA but had one walk and seven strikeouts. Two relievers struck out six more Georgia batters.
Henry Hunter chased an off-speed pitch out of the zone with runners on second and third to end a threat in the seventh. Kolby Branch struck out on a pitch high and outside with runners on first and third in the eighth.
“We had our chances all right there,” Georgia coach Wes Johnson said. “Tip your hat, they made some pitches.”
Georgia went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
“We’ve just got to do a better job of slowing the game down, shrinking the strike zone,” Hunter said.
Georgia will be designated the visiting team against Oklahoma State and then Sunday night against Duke should it win the first game of the day. The Bulldogs must win three straight games to advance to the super regional round.
