Watch now: Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson previews 2025 SEC Tournament
Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson previews the 2025 SEC Tournament on Tuesday, May 20, at Plainsman Park in Auburn.
For the Texas A&M baseball program, there’s still a chance to salvage what has been a difficult 2025 season.
An Aggies team coming off a run to the national championship game and that earned a preseason No. 1 ranking in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll will aim to keep its NCAA tournament dreams as it continues its run in the SEC tournament with a second-round game against Auburn on Thursday.
Between injuries and inconsistent play, Texas A&M was one of the bigger disappointments in the sport this season, entering the SEC tournament with a 28-25 mark and the event’s No. 14 seed (of 16 teams). According to the latest NCAA tournament bracket projection from DI Baseball, the Aggies were not in the 64-team field, instead listed as one of the four teams to watch behind the event’s “last four in.”
Their late push to enhance their resume got off to a strong start Wednesday with a 9-0 blanking of No. 11 seed Mississippi State, a game in which a Jace LaViolette grand slam in the second inning stretched his team’s lead to 6-0.
Auburn, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, should provide a stiffer test. The Tigers are 38-17 this season, which included wins in nine of their past 12 games. Despite playing in the same conference, this will be the first time Texas A&M and Auburn have played this season.
