On Thursday, the baseball programs at Texas and Tennessee will face off with more at stake than just determining which school with the initials “UT” and a shade of orange as their color is the superior side.
The Longhorns and Vols will meet in the quarterfinals of the 2025 SEC baseball tournament Thursday in Hoover, Alabama, with the winner getting one step closer to winning the sport’s best conference and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament (not that either team has to worry about making it into the 64-team field).
Texas, the tournament’s No. 1 seed and regular-season champion, has had a stellar first season under coach Jim Schlossnagle, whose much-publicized move from rival Texas A&M last year has paid major dividends for both parties. The Longhorns are 42-11 and ranked No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, having transitioned seamlessly from the Big 12 to the deeper, more competitive SEC.
If they hope to follow up their SEC regular-season title with a tournament championship, they’ll have to get through Tennessee, which advanced to the quarterfinals after a marathon 15-10 victory Wednesday against Alabama in the second round. The Vols, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, have had a strong season after winning the 2024 NCAA championship, with a 41-15 record. They entered the SEC tournament in a bit of a rut, though, with a 2-4 record in their final six regular-season games.
Thursday’s game will be the first meeting between the programs this season.
