The BartTorvik rankings consistently update throughout the offseason, even in early May.
So now that Buzz Williams has the foundation of his first roster as the Maryland men’s basketball head coach, where do the Terps stand in Torvik’s 2025-26 projections?
Maryland ranks 35th nationally. It is 57th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 16th in adjusted defensive efficiency.
Maryland has 10 players currently on its roster. Torvik has nine projected contributors, though it is not completely updated with all the player movement. Tafara Gapare, who is in the transfer portal, is still listed among the contributors. Guillermo Del Pino, the Spanish point guard who joined Williams’ freshman class last week, and rising redshirt freshman forward and Texas A&M transfer George Turkson Jr. are not.
Indiana transfer point guard Myles Rice, Texas A&M transfer center Pharrel Payne and McDonald’s All-American freshman combo guard Darius Adams are Maryland’s top projected contributors in terms of minutes. Payne has the highest projected usage and offensive rating. Next in order of minutes are Texas A&M transfer forward Solomon Washington, Washington State transfer guard Isaiah Watts, Virginia transfer forward Elijah Saunders, Kansas transfer guard David Coit and Texas A&M transfer guard Andre Mills.
Half of the Big Ten is rated ahead of Maryland: No. 2 Purdue, No. 4 Michigan, No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Illinois, No. 16 Michigan State, No. 19 USC, No. 23 Ohio State, No. 26 Wisconsin and No. 31 Iowa.
Some of the teams where former Maryland players transferred to include No. 11 Tennessee, No. 43 Villanova, No, 74 Georgetown and No. 100 George Mason.
The 2024-25 Terps finished No. 9 in the Torvik rankings, 25th in adjusted offensive efficiency and fifth in adjusted defensive efficiency. Of course, not a single player from that team, which made the Sweet 16, will wear a Maryland uniform during the 2025-26 season.
Williams’ 2024-25 Texas A&M team finished 21st at Torvik. The Aggies, who had two rotation players go on to sign with Maryland, ranked 45th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 12th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Payne ranked second in Torvik’s PRPG! and BPM measures.
