There’s no better symbol of a football team than its helmet. Who’s got the best one in Florida?

Designing a great helmet offers plenty of options. Most are based around the team’s main logo, like Miami’s U or the rattler of Florida A&M. Some take an aspect of their mascot, as Florida State does with its spear for the Seminoles. Or they make a style that becomes synonymous with the program, like Alabama’s numbers, Michigan’s classic wings or Florida’s Gators script. No matter what route the team takes, as long as it looks cool, it will work.

As teams develop more alternate uniforms, it’s become harder to pin down one distinctive helmet for each team. For the purposes of this poll, we’ll be looking at the 2024 college football season and highlighting the primary helmet each FBS and FCS team in Florida used. Once we’re done running through all 10, vote for your favorite lid in the state.

UF has a great gator head logo, but it’s hard to argue with the blue script “Gators” on orange helmets. The white stripe down the middle with a blue outline pulls the whole design together, and it looks great on both the home and road uniforms. Florida also occasionally breaks out an alternate, like a blue throwback or a sick black look, but there’s a good reason they roll with the orange nearly every week.

FSU’s gold helmet features a dynamic garnet spear adorned with a feather, emblematic of the Seminole tribe from which it takes its sports name. The helmet looks even better when filled with tomahawk stickers, one of the best traditions in college football. FSU also has a white alternate, but gold is the standard.

No reason to complicate things. Miami has a simple U, half green and half orange, on a white helmet with an orange stripe outlined in green. That’s all it needs to look awesome. The ‘Canes also roll out a black helmet every now and then that somehow still works.

Central Florida has a lot of helmet options, but most feature the UCF wordmark logo with a sword as the stripe down the middle. They use white and gold regularly, but for the case of this poll, we’re looking at the black option with gold lettering. Sadly, the annual Space Game helmets, which always are a smash hit, don’t count for this poll.

FAU’s primary matte blue helmet features a different logo on either side of the red-and-white stripe. On the right side is a red palm tree, and on the left the red state of Florida with “Atlantic” in white capital letters running down its middle. The team also has a white and red version of the dual-logo helmet and black and white options with “Owls” in red script.

They used to feature a chrome finish, but the gold helmets of South Florida no longer have that reflective shine. They do still have the solid bull-as-a-U logo in green, and forgoing the stripe is a strong design choice. The Bulls do have a black helmet with a triple-white stripe, as well as white standard and oversized-logo alternates.

It’s really hard to pick a primary helmet for Florida International, as they only used two more than once: a white look with a gold-and-blue triple stripe and “305” on either side, and a darker blue option with the panther-head logo. The panther option showed up more across other variations, so we’ll go that route here. Unfortunately, these pale in comparison to the blue-and-pink “Vice U” lids that just scream Miami.

FAMU Rattlers

Florida A&M‘s iconic orange rattler logo with white fangs and a green tongue is stamped on all versions of the 2023 Black college football champion’s helmets. In 2024, FAMU had an even split between their orange and white helmets, and while both look great, we’re giving the nod to the boldness of the orange finish.

B-CU sports two dual-logo helmets. The maroon helmets have “Bethune” in white text on the left side with the player’s number on the right, while the gold helmets have “Wildcats” in maroon script on the right with the number on the left. Both versions have a fun quirk: the BC interlocking logo on the back that looks especially cool when it sits in an indentation. The maroon version gets the slight edge here.

Stetson Hatters

Stetson doesn’t try too much with its design: the green S logo with the eponymous hat embedded on a white helmet. The Hatters do have a green alternate with an oversized white logo on the right side and the player’s number in white on the left.
