Who is Will Venable? New White Sox manager is son of former Reds outfielder Max

The Chicago White Sox are expected to hire Will Venable as their new manager, according to multiple reports late Tuesday.

Venable is the son of former MLB outfielder Max Venable, who played parts of three seasons for the Cincinnati Reds from 1985 to 1987.

Will, who turned 42 years old Tuesday, was an MLB outfielder as well, from 2008 to 2016. Will batted .249 with 81 homers and 135 stolen bases over parts of nine seasons, mostly for the San Diego Padres.

Will Venable spent the last two seasons as the Rangers associate manager under Bruce Bochy.

What to know about Will Venable, who will manage a White Sox team that lost 121 games this past season:

Will got to work with his dad shortly after the Padres drafted him in 2005.

In 2006, Will joined Single-A Fort Wayne of the Midwest League. Max was the Wizards’ hitting coach that season.

The two worked together again in 2009, when Will played for the Triple-A Portland Beavers, and Max was their hitting coach.

At Princeton University, Will starred in baseball and basketball.

The Tigers recruited Will to play basketball. He didn’t play baseball his freshman year at Princeton.

Will earned first-team all-Ivy League honors, and played on teams that participated in NCAA tournaments in both sports.

Will’s older brother, Winston, played college football at Boise State, and played several seasons in the CFL.

Will has worked for the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers since his playing career ended.

Will was hired by the Cubs in 2017 as a special assistant to president Theo Epstein.

He was a first-base coach for the Cubs for two seasons, and third-base coach for one season.

He was a bench coach for the Red Sox for two seasons, and the Rangers’ associate manager for the past two seasons.
