Alex Bregman had options, but the two-time World Series champion was sold on the Red Sox.
During his introductory press conference in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, the 30-year-old infielder explained what led to his decision.
“I feel like I have a great opportunity to win here,” Bregman told reporters, as seen on NESN. “Obviously, playing at Fenway is awesome. Playing for a city that not only loves winning, but expects to win. I like playing in those pressure-packed environments, and I feel like I got that here in Boston.”
Bregman reportedly received offers from the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs after he turned down an initial offer from the Houston Astros. Bregman admitted leaving Houston, the organization that drafted him and where he played the last nine seasons, was “definitely difficult.”
Ultimately, however, the Red Sox won out and signed Bregman to a three-year deal reportedly worth $120 million with opt-outs after each of the first two years.

Bregman lauded Boston’s roster of established veterans and younger players who represent one of the best farm systems in baseball.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be in the playoffs the first eight years of my career, and I plan on continuing to do that here,” Bregman said in his opening statement. “I’m a winning player. This is a winning organization. Those players are winning players. We have winning coaches here. I plan on winning here.
“After talking with some of the guys over the last two days, I can see that there’s something special here, franchise players, veteran players, young players, all ready to get after it.”
Safe to say Bregman is ready himself.
