Will Alabama Football season opener be against one of CFB’s ‘most improved’ teams?

Not many Florida State fans are counting on a 1-0 start to the 2025 college football season. Early betting lines have Alabama Football as more than a touchdown favorite.

Hype for the game will be considerable. After going 2-10 last season, the Seminoles are being discussed as the most improved team for the 2025 season. ESPN’s Andrea Adelson picked FSU to improve more than any other FBS team. Adelson explained that ‘most improved’ could still not provide more than seven wins. Still, two wins to seven wins would be a massive improvement.

In analyzing schedules for SEC teams, College Football News (CFN) projected the season-opener in Tallahassee would be the Crimson Tide’s second-toughest challenge. CFN’s subjective conclusion is implausible. If it is correct, Alabama will have an easier time beating LSU, Tennessee, and Oklahoma in Tuscaloosa, and South Carolina, Missouri, and Auburn on the road.

FSU might be ‘most improved’ but the Seminoles were horrifically bad last season. They will not go from 2 wins to 10 wins and probably will not get to eight.

FSU counting on Gus and improved O-line against Alabama Football

The two most often mentioned reasons to project significant improvement from the Noles are Gus Malzahn and transfer additions on the FSU offensive line. Projecting how much Malzahn will improve the FSU offense deserves a dive too deep for a single post. Alabama football fans can stay tuned for that.

The 2025 FSU offensive line has been rebuilt with four transfers, projected as starters. Ole Miss transfer, Micah Pettus, is an experienced LT at 6’7″ and 350 lbs. Other additions are Vanderbilt transfer, Gunnar Hansen, UCF transfer Adrian Medley, and Gonzaga transfer Luke Petitibon. The new players are expected to team up with Richie Leonard and cure the ills of FSU’s weak pass protection and anemic rushing attack.

FSU message boards indicate many fans are skeptical. Recent history reminds them to be wary of offseason predictions. Last summer, credible college football expert Phil Steele predicted the 2024 FSU offensive line would be the fifth-best in college football. Steele wrote, “Last year FSU had 206 career starts back on the O-Line and went a perfect 13-0 winning the ACC. This year they have 187 career starts and coach Norvell told me that this could be his best Oline ever as it is the deepest they have been.” In fairness to Steele, many predictions for the 2024 Florida State team were way off the mark. What FSU fans most remember is that Mike Norvell could not have been more wrong.
