Will Howard got the win, so he gets to do some talking.
In a recent interview with longtime NFL head coach Jon Gruden for “Gruden’s QB Class,” Howard clowned Tennessee for the way it entered Ohio Stadium back on Dec. 21 of last year. The Volunteers took the field shirtless for their first-round College Football Playoff game against the eventual national champions. Howard did nothing but laugh.
“The funny thing is they came out with their shirts off and ran over to the opposite endzone and immediately put them back on,” Howard recalled. “I was like, ‘What the f*** are these clowns doing, man?’
“At that moment, I knew we had them.”
Ohio State went on to win the game 42-17.
Leading up to the matchup in Columbus, talk of how the SEC would fare in a cold-weather game dominated talk shows and columns alike. If Tennessee’s entrance was an attempt to send a message, Ohio State wasn’t picking up.
The Buckeyes led the Vols 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ohio State scored on each of its first 3 drives while Tennessee was forced to punt on each of its first 3 drives. Ohio State cleared 200 yards in the opening quarter while Tennessee managed only 16 yards. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava didn’t complete a first-quarter pass.
Howard finished 24-for-29 for 311 yards with 2 touchdowns.
