Will Howard Praises Emeka Egbuka: ‘Never the Star, Never Complained

Ohio State Buckeyes Emeka Egbuka Never Got His Gold Star

Egbuka’s career is finished with the Buckeyes, and he sits as the school’s all-time receiving leader in catches and yardage. His college totals were 205 receptions for 2,868 yards and 24 touchdowns. His 2024 season saw him net 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Buckeyes. His yards per reception was 12.5.

Kyle McCord, the quarterback who was there as a backup to C.J. Stroud, started in 2023 and then transferred to the Syracuse Orange, said, “At Ohio State, his four years there? Obviously had a great career. He’s a great player. But they never really was the star receiver.

“Obviously, being in the room with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, Marvin, and then just this past year with Jeremiah Smith? I never felt like he got the credit he deserved but produced every year.”

Egbuka is also credited with recognizing weaknesses in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s pass coverage that he thought his team could exploit. Did that lead to the Buckeyes ultimately winning the game? Many believe it did.

What’s Next for Egbuka?

The Los Angeles Chargers are thought to be interested in Egbuka for the upcoming NFL draft. He is projected as a first-round pick.

Their second-round pick, Ladd McConkey, could use some help on the Justin Herbert-led offense, as could Quentin Johnson.

The Chargers were a one-and-done playoff this past season. After leading a team that won 11 games, QB Herbert stumbled badly in the playoffs with a career-high four interceptions.

The Chargers are on a mission to move to the top of the AFC West. Egbuka is a guy who could help get them there.
