BY COACHING UP THE NEXT GENERATION. WESH 2’S MEREDITH MCDONOUGH TALKED TO ONE OF HIS FORMER PLAYERS TODAY. HE WAS KNOWN AS THE JUICE AND MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN THE BIG LEAGUES, BUT ALSO RIGHT HERE AT HOME IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CHET LEMON HAS PASSED AWAY, HIS WIFE TOLD THE DETROIT FREE PRESS THAT HE WENT TO SLEEP AT THEIR HOME AND DID NOT WAKE UP. LEMON PLAYED FOR THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX AND THE DETROIT TIGERS. IT WAS WITH THE TIGERS WHERE HE HAD A MAJOR ROLE IN THE 1984 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM. AFTER A 16 YEAR BIG LEAGUE CAREER, LEMON BECAME A LOCAL YOUTH BASEBALL COACH, LAUNCHING CHET LEMON JUICE. I TALKED TO ONE OF HIS FORMER PLAYERS WHO WAS ON THE 1995 AAU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM FOR 12 AND UNDER. HIS FAVORITE PHRASE I WOULD ALWAYS SAY WAS BIG FELLA. SO ANYTIME YOU WOULD SEE HIM, HE’D BE LIKE, HEY, WHAT’S GOING ON, BIG FELLA? HOW’S IT GOING? YOU KNOW, HUGE SMILE, HUGE PERSONALITY. ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT REALLY LIT UP THE ROOM WHEN YOU WERE WITH HIM. AND THEN AGAIN, LIKE I SAID, WHEN YOU WERE PLAYING WITH HIM, YOU ALWAYS JUST FELT COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT WHEN YOU WERE PLAYING FOR HIS TEAM. MIKE WENT ON TO SAY THAT CHET LEMON WAS REALLY THE FOUNDER OF TRAVEL BASEBALL RIGHT HERE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA AND HAD A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON THE PLAYERS AND THE FUTURE OF THE SPORT HERE. CHET LEMON WAS 70 YEARS OLD.

Chet Lemon, known as “The Juice,” who made a name for himself in Major League Baseball and in Central Florida, has died at the age of 70.His wife told the Detroit Free Press that Lemon went to sleep at their home in Apopka and did not wake up. Lemon played for the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers, where he had a major role on the 1984 World Series championship team.After his 16-year career in the big leagues, Lemon became a local youth baseball coach, launching Chet Lemon’s Juice. Mike Muzeka, a former player on the 1995 AAU National Championship Team for 12 and under, shared his memories of Lemon.”His favorite phrase was big fella, so anytime you would see him it was how’s it going big fella, huge smile, huge personality, lit up the room, and when you were playing for him you always felt comfortable and confident playing for his team,” Muzeka said.Muzeka also noted that Lemon was the founder of travel baseball in the Central Florida area and had a tremendous impact on the players and the future of the sport.
